On our post The Power of Clarity we explained the importance of knowing what we want in our lives.

After all, if we don’t know what we want, we just can’t place the order for it, can we?

That pillar is very important because it sets the foundation to design a blueprint, a plan to achieve the life we dream of.

This time, I’ll explain the next step that builds on the previous one. This is why you need to work on being clear about what you want before proceeding with this step.

Some time ago I had a very interesting experience. I was driving with my son inside a new subdivision because I wanted to show him some cute decorations that I have seen the day before on a particular house. We found the house, I showed it to him and we were ready to go back home. To my surprise, I found myself driving in circles, to the point that I was completely lost.

I knew exactly where I wanted to go, but I didn’t have a clue where I was!

Therefore, I couldn’t figure out how to get there. The only reasonable thing to do at that point was to set the GPS so it could give me the route.

That incident made me realize that we need to know exactly where we are regarding an area of our lives, and we need to be very clear about what we want to accomplish in order to establish the necessary steps to achieve that particular goal.

Action

  1. In order to find out what you want, I recommend you take a look at The Power of Clarity post on the Self Help page. There you’ll find the necessary steps to find out what you want and be crystal clear about the life you will design.

Make sure you find out what you want before continuing with the next step or you could be sabotaging yourself without even knowing it.

If you center your attention on what you’d love to create before discovering how much effort you’ll need to make to get there, it will be much easier for you to feel motivated and empowered to take action, rather than feel discouraged.

2. To know where you are now, follow this process.

  • In our lives we have several areas that may be grouped into categories.

Here I show you some examples. There are not in a particular order. Feel free to add more areas:

Relationships

Health

Family

Emotional

Financial

Career

Spiritual

  • Select no more than five areas to work on for now. This is important because if you choose too many areas, your efforts will dissipate instead of remaining focused on the most painful areas.
  • The areas where you struggle the most are the ones that need to be addressed first.
  • Knowing what you want, evaluate where you are in your life right now. For each area, assess where you are on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is what you wantwhat your vision for your life is, and 1 is something very far from your vision.
  • This is the reason why the first step is to know what you want.
  • Be honest with yourself. This is the only way to set your path towards what you desire in your life and getting there. Assess where you are now, not where you would like to be.

3. Now that you know your starting point and your destination:

  • Divide what you need to do into small goals.
  • Treat your progress as stairs, step by step.
  • A great way to do this is to get involved in research, courses, and online programs.
  • Educate yourself about what you can do today for your future.

Time will pass anyway, you’ll feel better if you make the most of that time and see yourself closer or even arriving at your desired destination and fulfilling your purpose here.

Remember to enjoy the process, because that process is your life.

The best is yet to come!
